Flooding and landslides swept away cars and knocked down houses as a violent storm killed at least 32 people Saturday on the Portuguese island of Madeira. A month's worth of rain fell in just eight hours.

The deluge felled trees, washed away bridges and cut off parts of the Atlantic island, a popular tourist destination about 1,000 kilometres southwest of Lisbon.

The massive storm followed a weeks of rain, making this one of the wettest months on record.
