Freaky Drought Affects Indian Crops
The severe drought in Northen India is causing the main winter crop, mustard, ripen ahead of time. The region's main winter crops of mustard, wheat and spinach should be harvested during the months of February or March, not in January.
Farmers are worried their crops have not reached their full potential.
"We have been facing lots of problems over the past two to three years, because of not enough rainfall. This year our mustard crop has ripened before usual, and the premature ripening of a crop is a bad omen. 75 percent of our crop has already been hit," said a local farmer.
The drought is also making the Earth rise in temperature, making it hard for farmers to sow their staple crops. Half of India's population depends on agriculture for their livelihood.
